Kaity Cambanis is a qualified child kineticist with two degrees from the Free State University in Bloemfontein. Too few parents realise how important good general motor development is for the overall development of the young child. Previous generations were far more physically active. It has now become necessary to design special motor stimulation programmes that are aimed at addressing the problems created by sedentary life style.

The confidence children gain through succeeding in movement/ sport, raises their self confidence as well as self esteem, and makes them perform better overall academically. The appreciation they are given through achieving and accomplishing an obstacle gives them a drive to better in all areas. This creative outlet (movement) can also help learning disabled children to better control their emotions.

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder)
ADD/H (Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity)

What is ADD/H or also known as ADHD:
ADD/H is caused by neurolobiological factors which influence neurotransmitter activity in certain parts of the brain, and which have a strong genetic basis. There is a great deal of evidence that ADD/H runs in families and up to 80% is genetically linked. ADD/H is not caused by poor parenting, family problems, poor teachers or schools, too much TV, food allergies, or excess sugar, although these factors could influence the intensity of the condition.

How is ADD/H treated:
Clinical experience has shown that the most effective treatment for ADD/H is a holistic approach with a multi-professional team of experts:

A lot can be done through physical and motor development to make the life of the hyperactive child with attention deficiency more tolerable. The sports coach and motor therapist must know how to control these children during participation in physical activities, in order to be successful.

* Treatment consists of a combination of:
* Medication
* Dietary intervention
* Necessary natural supplementation
* Correction of the essential fatty acid deficiency
* Therapy and/ or counselling to learn coping skills and adaptive behaviour

Child kinetics is such a programme:

* It is both remedial and preventative
* It strives to rectify problems that can hamper a learner's school readiness
* Assists in the early identification of possible learning problems
* It also promotes good physical health and development of sporting abilities
* All learners from pre-school through to primary school can benefit from the programme

Movement education from pre-school as well as primary school children is important in developing concepts of spatial relationships, movement efficiency, sequencing skills, perceptions of sizes, shapes, and timing which are all necessary for successful experiences in cognitive activities such as mathematics, science, language, reading and spelling.
